Fisherwomen are amongst poorest in Sunderbans. They fight battles for survival at multi-fronts. While their family depends on their everyday small earnings to maintain household food security, entire burden of household chores also remain on them and they work from morning till midnight to maintain their families. Fishermen are often away from homes due to deep sea fish catch or other job related migrations. In such situation fisherwomen become bread earners for the families but the sad reality is they are not recognised as ‘Fisher’ by the government. Thus they do not get government entitlements reserved for fishers. Discrimination against fisherwomen continues inside their homes where they have to carry entire burden of care work (Cooking, cleaning, taking care of children and elderly, fetching water etc.). Once again their contribution in form of care work goes unrecognised by the state and also by their own family members and society. If we look at macro-economic policies aiming at empowering women, entire focus is on developing capacity of women to join formal economy (through SHG, rural credit etc.). The economic empowerment indeed is important for overall empowerment of women. But only economic empowerment, that too understood from a narrow perspective (not considering indirect contribution of care work to formal economic sector) jeopardises larger goal of ending gender inequality. Hence it is important to highlight women’s contribution as unpaid care giver and steps should be taken to reduce their care work burden through government policies and by changing mindset of our society towards women. The film will advocate this purpose.
